Digital IDs and the End of Sovereignty: What They Aren't Telling You

Britain has never had one single written constitution like America. Our laws and constitutional arrangements have been built up over centuries, and Parliament has enormous power to change them. Then there’s the Human Rights Act, the European Convention and the legal obligations that successive governments have inherited. But that’s only part of this. Remember when Starmer announced his digital ID plans in 2025? Millions of people signed a petition opposing mandatory digital ID, and the national scheme was eventually cancelled. Yet the wider move towards a digital government hasn’t simply stopped. We’ve still got GOV.UK One Login, GOV.UK Wallet, digital verification and plans to bring more government credentials together in one place. And this is what I want people to think about. We’re gradually moving towards a world where proving who you are, where you work, what you’re entitled to and whether you can access certain services is increasingly handled through digital systems. I’m not talking about some bloke turning up with a chip and a needle tomorrow. I’m talking about the bigger picture. The technology, the infrastructure and the growing reliance on digital identity. Now put that alongside the possibility of Britain eventually introducing a completely new written constitution. A new set of rules. A new legal framework. A new way of governing the country. And potentially a much more connected digital state. Think about how easily something introduced as convenient can become something people are expected to use. Then think about what happens when opting out becomes increasingly difficult. This is why I’m looking at the bigger picture through the lens of problem, reaction, solution. Because when a country reaches breaking point, the public starts demanding change. And whatever is presented as the solution at that moment could fundamentally reshape the relationship between citizens and government. I’m not claiming every development is part of one proven master plan. I’m looking at what’s already happening, what’s written into legislation and where these developments could lead. One thing is certain: we need to pay attention before decisions affecting future generations are made without proper public scrutiny. Because there’s a difference between using technology to make life easier and building a society where you need technology just to participate in it.
